WASHINGTON; The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits nutrient content claims for foods containing specific omega 3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentanoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), as 3 omega may help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. As the FDA declined to respond within the required 120-day time period to a petition submitted on behalf of three Washington-based seafood processors, the approval became retroactive Jan. 16 2004.
